Unit topic Two: Kayaking and canoeing; term one (5 weeks)

Students will be introduced to the ethics, skills, clothing and equipment to provide safety while kayaking. They will develop and perform: paddling, entry and exit skills and also rescue procedures. Also students will have to illustrate their perception of safety and care for themselves, others and the environment. This will be taught in both the classroom setting and on the lake. The culmination of this unit will result in a paddling excursion within the Lake Wanaka area either using canoes or sea kayaks.

                   Select clothing and fit personal equipment.
                   Demonstrate kayaking skills.
                   Demonstrate rescue procedures.
                   Demonstrate an understanding for the care for self, others, and the environment.
