Unit topic: Mountain biking; term two (four weeks)
Students will be introduced to the sport of Mountain Biking. This will be done through an investigation of the principles surrounding Mountain Biking. The basics of clothing and equipment will be introduced at school, while basic riding skills will be developed at school and by using the mountain bike tracks within the Wanaka area.This will require the students to develop riding skills to complete a minimum of two assessment rides of at least two hour long for unit 457. People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare for mountain biking on intermediate to expert terrain; complete mountain bike rides on intermediate to expert terrain; and demonstrate responsible environmental and safety practices.
For students who would like to extend themselves they can also concurrently undertake US 20817 plan for, participate in and evaluate mountain bikes rides on intermediate to expert terrain.

- Demonstrate knowledge and use of biking equipment
- Prepare for a ride
- Complete two mountain bikes rides
- Plan for each mountain bike ride.
